Adelaide - a city of churches, the food and wine capital of Australia, sandstone homes and cottages with sweeping gardens and greenbelts.

When Colonel Light founded Adelaide in 1836, his plan was simple: a one square mile city centre and lots of open space. He laid out the streets in a grid, surrounded by a ring parklands which are now State Heritage Listed.

 

 

     

South Australia's wine growing regions are world-renowned and produces over half of Australia's wine mainly in the Barossa ValleyMcLaren Vale and the Coonawarra districts.

Both the Barossa Valley and the McLaren Vale are within an hour's drive of Adelaide. The Coonawarra Region is a 4-hour drive, where the precious Terrarossa (red soil) is less than 10 miles long and just over a mile wide . It produces the legendary Cabernet Sauvignon.

Remarkable Rocks

Remarkable Rocks, Kangaroo Island

   

Australia's third largest island, Kangaroo Island, south of Adelaide, was discovered and named by Matthew Flinders in 1802. The Great Southern Ocean from Antarctica pounds its southern shores.  Many of its plants and animals are extinct elsewhere. It is the habitat of the kangaroo, wallaby, echidna, brush-tailed possum, southern brown bandicoot, Australian sea lion, New Zealand fur seal and introduced ring-tailed possum, koala, emu, Cape Barren goose and platypus. 200 bird species, reptiles and 443 native plants are also protected.
